    Today, our light aircraft transfer takes us to Namibia. In a wide valley sometimes flush with grass, Desert Rhino Camp lies in the enormous Palmwag Concession. Here, experienced trackers patrol and protect one of the largest free-ranging populations of Critically Endangered desert-adapted black rhino in Africa.

    The camp has comfortable Meru-style tents and a main area that overlooks a sweeping plain dotted with Namibia’s national plant, the welwitschia. The campfire encourages inspired storytelling under Namibia’s star-studded skies. Desert Rhino Camp is run in conjunction with the local community and Save the Rhino Trust. You'll gain an amazing insight into the ecology and conservation of this area.

    Aside from the desert-adapted black rhino to be found in the area, Palmwag Concession's freshwater springs also support healthy populations of desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, gemsbok, springbok, kudu and predators such as lion, cheetah, leopard, and brown and spotted hyena.

    Almost miraculously in this stark environment, enormous elephant thrive along with giraffe, lion and brown hyena. Gemsbok (oryx), springbok, steenbok, scrub hare, and inquisitive ground squirrel are also seen. Birds are equally diverse, with regular endemics like Rüppell's korhaan, Benguela long-billed lark and lark-like bunting.

One of the most spectacular areas on earth, this pristine desert wilderness is one of Africa’s most compelling natural regions. Defined by infinite horizons, striking landscapes and craggy mountain heights, Southern Africa’s largest private nature reserve, the NamibRand Nature Reserve is an immense 215 000 hectares (530 300 acres) terrain of iconic dunes and arid desert in this ‘vast place of nothingness’.

    The spectacular dunes at Sossusvlei, arrayed in magnificent hues of orange, buttermilk, pumpkin and sienna, are part of the Namib Sand Sea which is the biggest dune field south of the Sahara. Towering over a vast, dry pan, these lofty dunes, shaped by sands millions of years old, are among the highest in the world. Known as the Living Desert, the dunes of the Namib abound with specially adapted wildlife and over 114 bird species.

    Namibe is perched between the edge of the expansive Namib Desert and the cold waters of the Benguela Current flowing to the north offshore. Thanks to the blend of cool water and proximity to the desert, Namibe has a cool dry climate and desert vegetation. The most famous of these desert plants is the Welwitschia mirabilis, a rare plant found only in the Namibe Provence of South Angola and the Namib Desert
