Land of the Rising Sun Land of the Rising Sun

Land of the Rising Sun

Japan, or the "Land of the Rising Sun" as it is also known by, is a unique and awe inspiring country. We hope you can join us on our 13 night exploration of Japan from Tokyo to Hiroshima.

We have organised our tour specifically to travel through Japan during the Cherry Blossom season, with luck we will be able to experience this magical event on our journey.

We start with 3 nights in the capital, Tokyo. The city dazzles with its combination of traditional culture and passion for everything new.

Our next stop is Hakone where we will spend 2 nights with the chance to explore the world famous Mount Fuji and its surrounds in-depth. We then make our way south to the ancient capital of Kyoto which was the seat of the emperor between 794 to 1868. Due to the city's deep cultural heritage it was one of the few Japanese cities spared bombing by the Allies during WWII.

From Kyoto we catch the high-speed bullet train to Hiroshima, the site of the dropping of the first atomic bomb. The city rebuilt itself from the ground up and now stands as a city for peace. The site of the detonation was turned into a park aptly named the Peace Memorial Park with a museum at its centre.

The last stop on your journey will be Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. Osaka is known for its great food, shopping and modern attractions and is great way to end the journey.

Begin your exploration of Tokyo today with a visit to Meiji Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the deified spirit of Emperor Meiji and a popular place for traditional Japanese weddings.

After visiting the shrine we will take a sushi cooking lesson and learn to prepare maki sushi (rolled sushi), and nigiri sushi (sushi rice topped with a slice of raw fish).  You will then get to enjoy your homemade sushi for lunch.

Our final stop for the day is Asakusa, Tokyo’s old town where you can soak up the atmosphere of what Tokyo must have been like hundreds of years ago. Visit Sensoji, also known as Asakusa Kannon and Tokyo’s oldest temple. The Broadway leading up to the Temple is called Nakamise and this shopping street has been providing temple visitors with a variety of traditional, local snacks and souvenirs for centuries.

This evening we will gather for our welcome dinner at a local restaurant.

We will enjoy lunch afterwards before we head to the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum. The man after whom the museum is named is renowed for the revival of Tsujigahana silk-dyeing, thought to be a lost art. Here, you will see many intricate works of art on beautiful silken kimonos.

The final stop today is a visit to Mt. Fuji's 5th station, where the road runs out on the mountain itself. The views looking down below are quite astounding and you will begin to understand why Japan's tallest mountain is so very revered.

Located in the center of the city, Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park takes up over 120,000 square meters and is dedicated to the legacy of Hiroshima as the first city in history to suffer a nuclear attack. Before the atomic bomb, the area where the Peace Park now stands used to be the political and commercial heart of the city, and for this reason it was chosen as the pilot's target during World War II. It was decided that the area was not to be redeveloped, but instead devoted to peace memorial facilities.

The park's main attraction is the Peace Memorial Museum. The museum covers the history of Hiroshima and the advent of the nuclear bomb. It provides visitors an opportunity to hear eyewitness testimonies and learn about the devastating effects the A-bomb had on the city of Hiroshima and its people.
