    Join us today to discover Tromsø's beautiful surroundings. Early morning, we visit Kvaløya (“Whale Island”), where reindeer and elk crossings are often sighted. Early evening, we begin our exciting trip to chase Earth's most magnificent light show from outer space, the Aurora Borealis. We leave the city lights behind us and drive to where we expect the clearest weather conditions. On some nights the Aurora appears right away, on other nights we have to be patient.

    After breakfast, we'll transfer to port and embark on your expedition cruise on board Silver Explorer. Join us on a journey to Svalbard and East Greenland, to see isolated islands, remote landscapes, glaciers, and to look for polar bears, walrus and musk oxen.

    Bear Island, Norway

    Almost half way between Tromsø and Svalbard is isolated Bear Island, considered the southernmost island of the Svalbard Archipelago. The unglaciated island is home to some of the largest bird colonies of the Northern Hemisphere. Common Guillemots, Brünnich’s Guillemots, Little Auks, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Northern Fulmars, and Glaucous Gulls are all found along the cliff. Weather depending, we will take the Zodiacs to explore the rugged coastline.

    Svalbard’s Southern Region

    In the fjords of southern Svalbard, search the ice and shorelines for seabirds, walruses, seals, and polar bears. Shore walks and Zodiac landings will bring you close to mystical wintry settings. The Expedition Leader and Captain will determine Explorer’s best course, depending on changing weather, ice conditions and the wildlife we encounter.

    There are several deep fjords and prominent glaciers in the northern reaches of Svalbard, as well as the northern hemisphere’s widest glacier front. Ice conditions will dictate how much can be accessed in terms of cruising bird islets like the Andøyane Islets or approaching glaciers like Monaco Glacier and Seliger Glacier.

    Scoresbysund is named for the Arctic explorer and whaler William Scoresby who charted the region in 1822. Conditions permitting we will enter this, the largest and longest fjord in the world, to look for spectacular icebergs and fascinating wildlife.

    The little village of Ittoqqortoormiit is one of very few settlements on the east coast of Greenland. About 550 people live here, and approximately 90 percent of them are native Greenlandic. If weather and ice allow, we will walk around the village, learn about the sled dogs and their traditional uses, and visit the community’s little church.

    This morning, you'll be met and transferred to your hotel upon disembarkation. Sprawling Reykjavík, the nation's nerve center is home to half the island's population. Reykjavík presents a colorful sight, its concrete houses painted in light colors and topped by vibrant red, blue, and green roofs. It's name comes from the Icelandic words for smoke, reykur, and bay, vík. The afternoon and evening will be at leisure.

    Today you will explore the Golden Circle which consists of Geysir, Gullfoss Waterfalls and Thingvellir National Park. Of all the spectacular nature that resides in Iceland these are three “must see” highlights that are easily experienced in one day. En route you will stop at Friðheimar family run tomato farm for a delicious lunch and a and a nice visit to their horse stables.

    Blue Lagoon, Iceland

    Journey to the centre of the earth. The dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano, also known as "Three Peaks Crater" is a truly unique natural phenomenon. For your comfort, we'll transfer to the crater by helicopter giving you a bird's eye view of the surrounding landscape. Join the team for a descend to 120 metres to the bottom of the volcano's magma chamber in an open cable lift. The volcano last erupted over 4,000 years ago and there are no indications of it erupting again in the near future. We’ll transfer by helicopter from the volcano directly to our final destination, the world renowned Blue Lagoon, staying 2 nights in a Junior Suite at the new Retreat Hotel.

    Located in the heart of an 800-year-old, moss-covered lava flow, the Retreat will be a place of relaxation, rejuvenation, and exploration. Conceived for both day and overnight experiences, the Retreat journey is designed to bring you closer to nature and the wonders of geothermal seawater. The Retreat is non-smoking and there are no televisions. Our aim is to erase the boundary between hospitality and wellness, creating a sanctuary of peace and serenity where you can unwind the clock of modern life and unlock the door to a wonder of the world.
